January 20, 2017 — Donald Trump becomes the US President

by rocknroll_ic86lw · March 9, 2012

Inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States, real estate mogul, celebrity and reality tv star Donald Trump was the oldest man (at that time) and one of the unlikeliest possibilities ever to become President. His campaign seemed to be little more than a publicity stunt to begin with, but he out-fought and outlasted all his competitors to win the Republican nomination, and defeated Democratic nominee Hilary Clinton handily in the general election of 2016.

His inauguration was not unlike that of most Presidents, an elaborate and carefully stage managed ceremony held on the National Mall in Washington DC. Estimates of the crowd in attendance that day vary from 160,000 to 600,000 people (considerably less than the crowd that turned out to Barack Obama inaugurated eight years before). The following day, the Women’s March on Washington, a protest against Trump (and his misogyny) was held at the same location, with over 470,000 people in attendance (the largest protest march in DC history) – and upwards of three million more at satellite rallies in other locations. Trump would later claim that the crowd for his inauguration was the largest ever for such an event, but the facts do not support this claim.
