April 4, 1985 — “Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future” premieres

by rocknroll_ic86lw · November 17, 2014

To this day, there has never been anything quite like Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future. Set in the present day but obviously science fictional, the titular Max Headroom is a computerised version of the likeness and personality of an unfortunate journalist named Edison Carter, created after Carter suffers severe head trauma after an attempt on his life. With his sharp, satirical takes on society and the media, and his distinctive stuttering delivery, Max becomes an overnight sensation…

Max Headroom, the character, would become one of the most recognisable figures of the 1980s, appearing in advertisements, music videos and tv shows featuring him as the lead character. The actor portraying him, Matt Frewer, retains a cult following to this day – not least because Max was not the last strange character he played.
