April 3, 33 CE — Jesus dies upon the Cross

After his betrayal, trials, scourging, being forced to wear a crown of thorns and carry his cross through the city of Jerusalem to Golgotha, Jesus of Nazareth, called the Christ and King of the Jews, was crucified, nailed to a wooden cross. Two other men were crucified at the same time, their crosses placed either side of his. Jesus actually died unusually quickly for someone crucified, as it is a slow, painful death that can last for days.

Upon his death, Jesus cried out Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? (“My God, my god, why hast thou forsaken me?”). Although it was day, the skies grew dark, the earth quaked and the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom. He would arise from the dead two days later.
