As luck would have it, it was Elon who didn’t find a chair when the music stopped. He and the Donald disagreed violently over the so-called Big Beautiful Bill – although let’s be clear, Elon’s opposition to the bill was only a principled stance if, like Elon, you believed in the principle that Elon should have all the money.
The break-up was messy and public, with the two slagging each other off on social media – Trump accused Musk of being ‘a big-time drug addict’ and Elon claiming that Donald ‘is in the Epstein files’ (and both of them acting like this was news to the rest of the world. Since then, Musk has largely fallen silent and Trump has not mentioned him publicly. Elon’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was taken over by Russell Vought, and most of the people he brought in with him, including the young man unconvincingly called ‘Big Balls” stayed when he left.
