As President, Donald Trump can reasonably be said not to have handled to covid epidemic well. He failed to take it seriously quickly enough, he made false statements about that led others to not take it seriously, he spread false rumours about the origins of the virus. He proclaimed, in the face of evidence, that chloroquine or its derivative, hydroxychloroquine, were effective against the virus, leading to shortages of these medicines and even deaths by overdose. He blamed the Obama administration for decisions he himself had made that worsened the epidemic (to be fair, these were decisions taken before the epidemic began). He ignored safety precautions for himself and those around him, and he mocked others who tried to take them.
And there seemed a certain degree of poetic justice when he finally caught it himself. Trump tested positive for covid on September 26. In early October, Trump was hospitalized with a severe case of COVID-19. Naturally, as President, he received the very best of care, and was taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for three days. After his recovery, he returned to saying the same things he had said before about the disease, and displaying the same carelessness – there was another outbreak a month later at an Election Night party he held in the White House.
