October 20, 2022 — Liz Truss steps down as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

by rocknroll_ic86lw · December 10, 2011

The odds were always against Liz Truss as Prime Minister. She was the fourth Conservative Prime Minister in a row, she had to follow Boris Johnson, and by 2022, the public’s patience with the whole neo-conservative project was growing pretty thin. The Prime Ministership was hers for the taking, but mostly because it was a poisoned chalice that no one else wanted (except for Rishi Sunak, it eventuated). It’s not for nothing that the Daily Star newspaper livestreamed footage of a picture of Truss next to a slowly rotting iceberg lettuce, the idea being – not incorrectly as it turned out – that the lettuce would outlast Truss’s leadership.

It wasn’t all Truss’ fault though – the Queen dying two days into her Prime Ministership was merely bad luck, but it cast a pall over her time at 10 Downing Street. In the event, Truss would be Prime Minister for only 44 days – less than a third of the next shortest tenure in the role (and he had the excuse of actually dying in office). Despite having been the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Truss is destined to be little more than a footnote in the history books.
