April 25, 1964 — The “It’s a Small World” exhibit at the New York World’s Fair is dedicated

One of the phrases most associated with Disneyland and other Disney projects, “It’s a Small World” first saw the light of day when it was officially dedicated by no less a personage than U Thant, the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Despite the fact that it cost an additional fee to take the ride(over the cost of entering the Fair itself), it soon became one of the most popular exhibits at the Fair. It probably helped that all admission costs were donated to UNICEF, but also that the attraction’s theme song “It’s a Small World (After All)” is one of the most earwormy things ever to come out of the Mouse Empire.

In 1966, the ride was relocated to Disneyland in Los Angeles, opening for visitors on May 28 of that year. Since then, versions of the ride have been opened at Disneyworld, as well as Disneyland locations in Paris, Hong Kong and Tokyo. It remains a popular attraction with visitors at all of these locations.
