January 6, 2026 — Trump returns to the idea of annexing Greenland

Before the news of Maduro’s abduction had even fully hit, the Trump administration, drunk on its success in Venezuela, had returned its attentions to Greenland. Once again, Trump was out there talking about America needing Greenland, and once again, the leaders of Greenland, Denmark and other states were telling him no. Politely, to begin with.

But as the crisis continued, words became increasingly strained. Several European nations, including Belgium, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Estonia, Slovenia and Iceland all deployed military forces to the defense of Greenland, sending a clear signal that an attack there would be an attack on all of these nations. Trump spoke of dissolving NATO, but the rest of NATO shrugged and went on without him. And possibly against him, if he persisted.
