July 12, 1540 — The marriage of Henry VIII and Anna of Cleves is annulled

by rocknroll_ic86lw · February 3, 2022

Unlike her predecessor, Katharine of Aragon, Anna of Cleves was quite willing to accept Henry’s desire to annul their marriage. Her compliance with Henry’s wishes brought rewards: she was permitted to still visit the court, she was treated with respect, she was looked after financially.

She did spend the rest of her life in England, though, so it’s not like it was all roses for her.
