Instagram almost wasn’t Instagram. When development started, it was originally going to be a location check-in app named burbn. Realising that this was (a) very similar to Foursquare, and (b) a terrible name, they refocused on photo-sharing (video would not be added until June 2013). The name instagram was a portmanteau of instant camera and telegram. Despite this, it was originally released under the name burbn, in what was basically a protoptype version on iOS as an iphone app. Six days later, it was released in its full version under the Instagram name.
Instagram would rapidly become one of the best known and most popular of social media apps. In April 2012, Instagram released an android version of its app, and in September of that year, its acquisition by Facebook was completed.
