Jon Bauman – better known to a generation of Americans as Bowser of Sha Na Na – hails from Brooklyn, New York. He first came to fame for his musical career, but would go on to appear in numerous tv shows and films, as well as working as a voice actor and game show host. But his most lasting legacy may be as the driving force behind the creation of the Truth in Music Act, which requires bands performing under the name of classic acts to have at least one of the original members of the band in the lineup.
When it was brought before the Congress in 1999, the Truth in Music Act failed to get through. Between 2005 and 2008, 34 state houses passed versions of the act, with Hawaii joining the list in 2020. Alabama considered the law in 2008 and again in 2010 but did not enact it on either occasion; the other holdout states are Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.
