“Love Me Do” was a number one hit for the Beatles in the USA (and Australia and New Zealand), their fourth of six that year. In the UK, it did less well, reaching only 17 – although when it was re-released twenty years later, it got to 4.
The song in its released version was co-written by Lennon and McCartney, although Lennon credits McCartney with having originally started working on the song years earlier in Hamburg. “Love Me Do” is one of the band’s more catchy tunes, although musically very simple.
